A screening of the film 'Mercy Mercy: A portrait of true adoption', a 90 minute documentary about the adoption of a child, Masho, from Ethiopia to a family in Denmark that provides a unique insight into the experiences and perspectives of all participants in the adoption process: the child, the birth parents, the adoptive parents, the social worker in Denmark, and the Ethiopian adoption agency. The screening will be followed by a panel and Q and A with the audience.
Panel:
LEMN SISSAY MBE is the author of several books of poetry alongside articles, records, public art, and plays. He was an official poet for the London Olympics. His Landmark Poems are installed throughout Manchester and London, in venues such as The Royal Festival Hall and The Olympic Park. Sissay is associate artist at Southbank Centre, patron of The Letterbox Club and The Reader Organisation, and inaugural trustee of World Book Night.
KATRINE W. KJAER is the Director of Mercy Mercy: A portrait of true adoption. Mercy Mercy was nominated for Best Cinema Documentary at the Grierson Awards 2015. Katrine is a film maker based in Denmark.
ROSE DAGOO is an Adoption Counsellor and Social Worker who has worked at PAC-UK for over 26 years as an adoption counsellor, working mainly with adoptive and birth parents, adopted adults and professionals.
JULIA GRANVILLE is a consultant Systemic Psychotherapist and Social Worker who worked for many years in the Fostering, Adoption and Kinship Care Team at the Tavistock Clinic in London. Julia has over 30 years experience in working with families in the voluntary and statutory sectors.
CHRIS ATKINS is a transnationally adopted adult who was born in Hong Kong. She is a registered social worker and a Trainer/Consultant with CoramBAAF. Before joining CoramBAAF, Chris worked extensively providing post-adoption and special guardianship support services within voluntary and statutory services.
JEAN ROBERTSON-MOLLOY is a British birth mother who 'relinquished' her baby for adoption in New Zealand in the 1960s. As a social worker, she gave herself the social work advice to give up her baby for adoption, to her later regret. Finding the Natural Parents Support Group (now known as the Natural Parents Network) in the 1980s was a revelation; she had found her soul sisters. Jean is actively involved in the UK Movement for an Adoption Apology and the Natural Parents Network.
DR. PERLITA HARRIS is Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Goldsmiths and will chair the panel. Her edited books include: In Search of Belonging: Reflections by transracially adopted people (BAAF 2006), The Colours in Me: Writing and poetry by adopted children and young people (BAAF 2008), and Chosen: Living with adoption (BAAF 2012). Perlita has a background in social work in adoption, including post-adoption. On a voluntary basis, she co-facilitates workshops for adopted adults who have an international element to their search for information and/or birth family.
