Event overview
Integrated Degree Anthropology - Justin Woodman Programme Convenor
In recent years, anthropological approaches to religion have been both
challenged and revitalised by developments in the cognitive sciences which
have entailed a radical re-thinking of the ‘meaning’ and ‘purpose’ of
human religiosity.
In this week's open lecture, we will explore these perspectives in
relation to the claim that religion can be understood as constituting a
by-product of human beings' evolved cognitive architecture, what this can
tell us about 'human nature', and consider what this might mean for the
anthropological/cross-cultural study of religion.
