Inter-cultural dialogue – local and global is the final event in the Dimensions of Locality series, exploring the nature of social cohesion and ways in which the academy can contribute to the growth and development of its local community.
As the Council of Europe notes in its foreword to the
Intercultural Cities1 initiative, successful cities and societies of the future will all be intercultural. The ways in which they exploit the potential of this cultural diversity to stimulate creativity and innovation and thus generate economic prosperity and a better quality of life is becoming one of the key challenges. Cultural diversity can, as the COE points out,be a rich resource for development if the public discourse of its local institutions and the behaviour of its people embrace
its potential for positive change.
In bringing together a group of artists, curators and cultural policy makers, “Inter-cultural Dialogue - local and global” will look at the meaning of inter-cultural collaborations within communities, as well as in wider trans-national contexts.
It will engage with the role of cultural diversity within the academy itself and will examine the role of its partnerships with local cultural institutions, community arts initiatives and artists in a shifting funding climate.
The evening will begin with a launch of the publication
“An Eye on Intercultural Dialogue”, the third booklet in a series of six that examine concepts that the authors believe are critical to shaping the future health of our society.
This will be followed by a Round Table whose members will include:
Paul Chapman LB Lewisham – European Projects Manager
Jim Campbell Professor of Social Work, Goldsmiths
Venu Dhupa Director Creative Development, Creative Scotland
Emily Druiff Director Peckham Space
Fabio Santos Director Project Phakama
Eugene Skeef Composer and Musician
Janet Vitmayer Chief Executive Horniman Museum
The discussion will then be opened up to the floor
