A seminar and workshop series exploring how current policies enable Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) to develop courses that meet the needs of learners for flexible, high quality learning opportunities based on a positive life choice.
In their guidance to the Director of Fair Access David Willets and Vince Cable have suggested that HEIs could consider ‘the range of programmes that universities will offer which could be attractive to under-represented groups, particularly mature students’, including part-time provision.
Government calls for more flexible provision to widen access, combined with changes in the financial support available for students, mean that many universities are considering expanding their part-time provision. Part-time study options can open up opportunities for many students who would otherwise not be in a position to participate in higher education because of financial, work or caring responsibilities. However, in the current context, there is a danger that part-time degrees will be viewed as a second class option.
This seminar will explore how far current policy enables us to develop courses that meet the needs of learners for flexible, high quality learning opportunities based on a positive life choice.
Claire Callender will provide an overview of the current situation for part-time learners, including financial support, and will be followed by a panel of learners who will raise some of the issues that are most important to them.
Sarah Speight will share her experience of the challenges of offering full and part-time provision in parallel.
The workshops will provide participants with the opportunity to explore the issues further and consider the implications for their institutions and the sector as a whole.
