Event overview
Documentary screening with accompanying photography about the resilience of racially minoritised youth during the pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and amplified deep-rooted structural inequalities and racial disparities in British society, with significant evidence that Black, Asian, and other minority ethnic groups were disproportionately adversely impacted. Using a documentary film and photobook, this event will present some of the key findings from research that examined the intersectional impact of the pandemic and systemic racism on racially minoritized children and young people.
"Two viruses – COVID-19 and racial discrimination – are currently killing in the UK"
(Solanke, 2020)
The impact of these viruses cause long-term poor outcomes especially within BAMEFC who are hardest hit. Survivors face ongoing damage to well-being and resilience, in terms of physical and mental health as well as social, cultural and economic (non-medical) consequences. Co-POWeR investigates their combined impact on practices for well-being and resilience across BAMEFC in the UK to create an holistic idea of vulnerabilities damaging BAMEFC.
The documentary and photography were produced in association with the report, titled ‘The Consortium on Practices of Wellbeing and Resilience in BAME families and communities’. This report details an 18-month investigation which looked at those who have experienced a disproportionate socio-economic and psychosocial impact. The research examined the effects on mental and emotional health and well-being and the psychological and social implications.
This work was carried out by Claudia Bernard, Professor of Social Work at Goldsmiths, in collaboration with Professor Anna Gupta, Royal Holloway, and Professor Monica Lakhanpaul, UCL, examined the implications of Covid-19 on children, young people and their families.
